Wexford's Oisin McDonagh made his Primavera debut at the weekend
Of course we’ve had brushes with Italian side Venezia in the past as Aaron Connolly spent some time on loan there in 2022 when they were in Serie B. Didn’t quite work out for the Galwayman so now we have set our sights on 16-year-old Wexford lad Oisin McDonagh who has been at the, now, Serie A side since last summer.
The current Ireland U17 captain left Wexford FC in August 2024 for Venice on a two-year contract after he impressed on trial. And the centre-half has made very good progress in the interim, now part of Venezia’s Primavera (U19) squad and the only player who was born in 2008 or later in that group. This is a league dotted with young Irish talent including Senan Mullen (18, CM) at Torino, Kevin Zefi (19, winger) at Roma and Justin Ferizaj (20, CM) at Frosinone.
And things got even better for Oisin on Saturday as he was introduced in the 83rd minute in the loss at home to Cittadella to make his Primavera debut. An incredible achievement for a 16-year-old who has gone beyond the usual corridors of football for our green shoots and is thriving. ☘️
